It’s been four weeks since you last heard from me, and let me tell you, a lot has happened in that time. There are many learnings I plan to share in the coming weeks, but before any of that, I wanted to start with something simpler. Something deeply personal.
Pure joy.
You see, my husband, the love of my life (right after our children 😊), turned 50 in July. And we had the chance to throw him an epic celebration. A milestone moment. A full-circle kind of evening.
Now, for those who don’t know his story, it’s one of quiet resilience and incredible growth. He came to this country at 17. Alone. Pumping gas to make ends meet, then driving a taxi, and eventually finding his way back to school. I often picture that young version of him, navigating a brand-new country without the comfort of regular contact with family, without certainty, but with grit. It’s hard not to get misty-eyed thinking about it. You can read more about his journey in his books, I’ll include the links below. But I digress.
For this milestone birthday, I wanted to honor that journey. Not with just a party, but an experience. Something meaningful and symbolic. And what better place than the Top of the World Trade Center. From a teenager arriving with nothing, to a man literally standing on top of the world, that’s the arc I wanted to celebrate.
The theme was Mission Possible, a nod to how unlikely this all may have seemed at 17, and how far he’s come since. And yes, we went all out. Here’s a glimpse into what made the night so special:
Arrival: Security was tight. Each guest received a glowing wristband before heading up in the iconic World Trade Center elevators, which showcased New York’s evolution on the ride to the 102nd floor.
Ambience: The decor was elegant. Black, gold, and pops of teal. A towering Vogue-style display highlighted his achievements, while long tables created a warm, communal feel.
Music: A violinist played both Bollywood favorites and American top hits, blending his two worlds in a way that was both personal and festive.
Food: From fresh sushi to dosa stations, the spread was incredible. There was so much food, people didn’t know where to start.
Visuals: Every seat had a view, both of the city skyline and the stage, with TV screens streaming the main program throughout.
Dress Code: Indian Formal / Formal. And wow, people showed up. The whole room glowed with color, culture, and love.
That was the setting. But what truly made it unforgettable was the emotion, the people, the stories, the love that filled every inch of that room. Our mentors and friends flew in to be with us, including John Maxwell and Dan Sullivan, who rarely attend birthdays, but made an exception for Sunny. Their speeches were personal, powerful, and full of wisdom.
The kids and I put together a video tribute, chronicling Sunny’s journey, and I swear, I caught a tear in his eye. Each of our boys shared heartfelt words about their father. I spoke about how they each reflect parts of him:
Sahib, with his desire to serve and give back
Rohan, the kindest soul I’ve ever met
Shaan, whose quick wit and love of learning remind me of their father every day
They are the best parts of us, and his greatest legacy.
Mentors like Arlin and Brad spoke about watching us grow as business partners and as a couple. Friends shared how deeply present and loyal he’s always been. And of course, there had to be a showstopper moment. A Bollywood dance production with 53 of us involved. Yes, a full dance-off between me and the boys. Did the girls win? Naturally. But it was all about celebrating Sunny’s favorite songs, and seeing everyone, every generation, dancing their hearts out.
And then came the moment. The one I’ll never forget. I want to share this moment with you all as well in the form of a video.
I was speaking about our boys, about how they each carry a piece of their father, and I looked over and saw his face. That face lit up. Filled with joy. No distractions, no worries, just pure, unfiltered happiness.
Even now, writing this, I tear up thinking about it.
That moment, standing there with our people, in that place, with that man, it felt like everything aligned. We were on top of the world, not because of the venue, but because of the love that filled the room. We were able to give him a gift he’s given all of us, over and over again, being seen, being celebrated, being loved.
It was pure joy.
The kind that fills your heart to the brim, where you think, I didn’t know I could love someone this much. To everyone who joined us, thank you. You made this memory one we’ll hold forever. And for those who couldn’t be there, I’m sharing the video links below so you can still be part of it.
With all my heart,
Kam
