The MSP Who Is Still Waiting to Feel Ready Will Finish Last

I have been in a lot of conversations with MSP leaders lately.

And one thing keeps coming up.

They are waiting.

Waiting for the right moment. Waiting for the technology to settle. Waiting until they feel ready to move.

I understand it. But I have seen this before.

In 2013, there were MSPs calling cloud a fad. That did not work out for them. And the same logic does not apply now. Because this time the pace is completely different. Cloud took almost ten years to truly adopt. AI is not giving anyone ten years.

Think about it this way. Someone once said to me that the Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy is now in their hand. Made by Apple. Everything that book described in the 1980s as science fiction is now a standard reality. That is how fast the world moves when a real shift happens.

AI is that shift. Be prepared and embrace it. Do not run from it.

The partners who pull it in and build with it will look different. More capable. A stronger solution for the businesses they serve. The ones who wait will look like last year’s business. And it will happen fast.

AI Will Not Replace MSPs. AI Powered MSPs Will.

Every week inside our MSP accelerator, leaders come together for two hours. We bring in guest speakers. MSPs share their experiences. And every single week, without fail, something new has dropped. New tools. New capabilities. New ways to do things that were not possible the week before.

Gemini three was just released last week.

That is the pace we are operating in.

And the MSPs who are not moving are falling further behind every single week. Not every year. Every week.

Here is what I keep telling MSP leaders.

AI is not going to replace MSPs.

AI powered MSPs will replace MSPs that are not adopting.

That is not a warning. That is the reality of where this market is heading. Customer retention will be at risk for the MSPs who are not stepping into this role. The ones who are not becoming thought leaders for their customers on AI will be replaced by someone who is.

First to market will always win. And there is enormous opportunity in this new way of thinking and this new way of helping the SMBs that depend on us.

Readiness Is Not a State of Being

A lot of MSP leaders hear this and still do not move. Not because they do not believe it. Because they do not feel ready.

And that is the trap.

Readiness is not a state of being. It is a feeling that comes after you take action.

You cannot feel ready to do something you have not done before. We have been programmed our whole lives to wait until we feel confident before we move. But the model is backwards.

The real sequence is this.

You take action first. Confidence develops. Readiness follows. And that is how you get unstuck.

Being stuck is not a problem either. It is a signal. An alert that more is available to you. In your business. In your leadership. In the way you are serving your clients. If you were not stuck, you would not even know there was more available.

That feeling is not a stop sign. It is an invitation to level up.

The Business That Funds the Culture You Want to Build

There is one more thing that comes up in almost every conversation I have with MSP leaders.

Culture and cash are not in conflict. But a lot of leaders are running their businesses like they are.

The intent is always good. Invest in people. Build a strong team. Take care of the culture. But you cannot build a bigger future for your team if you are not responsible for the financial health of the business funding it.

Here is what most leaders miss. It is not enough to tell your team that cash matters. You have to teach them how the business actually works. What the numbers mean. What happens when things are tight. When your team understands that, they show up differently during the hard periods. They rally. They help. They become part of the solution.

When leaders skip that transparency, something else happens. The team starts to feel like it is us versus them. Like decisions are being made at the top for reasons nobody understands. That dynamic is avoidable. Open the books. Share the reality. Your team can handle it.

And remember this. People are with you for a time, not forever. Part of your job as a leader is helping them understand how a healthy business works so they can carry that knowledge wherever they go next. That generosity comes back.

The one metric that changes everything when MSPs finally take it seriously is DSO. Days sales outstanding. The time it takes to turn an invoice into cash in your account.

Set aside half a day. Look at your processes. Find every place where you can shorten that cycle. If your DSO is in the 60s, you have a problem worth solving immediately. If you are in the 30s, there is still room to improve. The MSPs operating in single digit DSO are running a fundamentally different business. That number changes cash position, decision making and the ability to invest in what comes next.

The MSP leaders building something different right now are not waiting to feel ready. They are moving before they feel confident. They are treating being stuck as a starting point. They are running financially disciplined businesses. And they are stepping into AI not as a product to sell but as a transformation to lead.

AI powered MSPs will replace MSPs that are not moving.

The question is not whether you are ready.

The question is whether you are moving.
